How to export your Gmail with Google Takeout

  1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with the Google account you want to export.
  2. Click "Deselect all", then scroll down and tick only Mail.

    Optional: use "All Mail data included" to pick specific labels instead of everything.

  3. Scroll to the bottom, click Next step, choose delivery by download link, file type .zip, and a size (2 GB is fine — larger exports just split into multiple zips).
  4. Click Create export. Google takes minutes to hours; you'll get an email with the download link when it's ready.
  5. Download and unzip the archive. Inside Takeout/Mail/ you'll find a file named All mail Including Spam and Trash.mbox (or one .mbox per label).
  6. Drop that .mbox file into the box above — it opens immediately, no install needed.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly is the .mbox file in the Takeout zip?

Unzip the download, then look in Takeout/Mail/. The main archive is called All mail Including Spam and Trash.mbox. If you exported specific labels, you'll see one smaller .mbox per label instead. If your export split into several zips, each contains part of the Mail folder — open each .mbox separately.

My Takeout file is several GB — will it open here?

Yes. The viewer streams the file in small chunks and keeps only message metadata in memory, so multi-gigabyte archives are fine. Indexing a very large export takes a little while — watch the progress bar.

Does anything get uploaded to Google or to this site?

No. Opening the .mbox happens entirely in your browser tab — no server (ours or anyone else's) ever receives the file or its contents. You can confirm in your browser's developer tools (Network tab).

Can I get the emails back into another Gmail account?

Not with this tool — re-importing to Gmail requires an email client (e.g. Thunderbird, see the import guide) connected via IMAP. This viewer is for reading, searching, and exporting to CSV/PDF, not for re-uploading mail.

Do I need to pay to read my own Gmail export?

No. Viewing every message, searching, downloading attachments and exporting metadata CSV are free and unlimited. Only the merged PDF export requires the one-time $9.99 license.
