Why convert MBOX to PDF?
PDF is the format everyone can open: courts and opposing counsel in legal discovery, auditors and accountants at tax time, HR for investigations, or simply you keeping a searchable offline archive of an old mailbox. One merged PDF is far easier to review, page through, and hand over than a raw .mbox file.
Is the formatting identical to the original emails?
No — the PDF is a faithful textual record: headers, plain-text body (HTML-only messages are converted to text), and the list of attachment names and sizes. Attachments themselves are not embedded, and complex HTML layout is flattened. That keeps the document compact and review-friendly. Characters outside the Latin alphabet (e.g. Chinese, Japanese, Korean) cannot be embedded by the PDF engine's built-in fonts; affected sections are marked with a note.
Are attachments included in the PDF?
Their names and sizes are listed under each message, but the attachment binaries are not embedded. You can download any attachment individually from the message view (free) and hand it over alongside the PDF.
How long does a big mailbox take?
Indexing streams the file in chunks, so even multi-GB Gmail Takeout exports open fine. PDF export processes messages one at a time with a live progress display — thousands of messages work, it just takes proportionally longer.
Is it really private? This is confidential correspondence.
